FROM monsters under the bed to scares about tainted food, the idea of danger lurking in everyday life is particularly disturbing. It inspires a feeling of ambush, a fear that something domesticated could turn and bite. Such fears are now being expressed about something that has suddenly become ubiquitous: the computer. A controversy over whether, and to what extent, visual display units (known as VDUS) and their keyboards could injure their operators is growing in business, government and academe.
