BP Amoco plc, accelerating its cost-cutting campaign, is moving seven divisions and more than 300 workers housed in the company's downtown tower to cheaper space in the western suburbs by yearend.
With BP Amoco's tower offices accounting for a majority of the 1,500 Chicago-area layoffs the company announced in February, the westward migration could reduce downtown head count to an estimated 700 to 900 employees.
Last December, right before the merger of Amoco Corp. and British Petroleum Co. plc was completed, there were 2,200 Amoco employees in the familiar white granite-clad skyscraper.
