Major Quake Closes Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline

A powerful earthquake that shook parts of Alaska on Sunday forced Alyeska Pipeline Service to shut down the 800-mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline after it was discovered that some of the supports holding sections of pipe above ground were damaged.

News of the 7.9 magnitude quake contributed to a firming of US light crude futures in early New York trading, but the futures later reversed their gains and closed lower. About 1 million barrels of oil per day flows through the long- distance pipeline.

The pipeline did not appear to be damaged and no crude was spilled, said Alyeska spokesman Mike Heatwole.
