The Great Depression was hard on Newfoundland and the government ran a series of deficits. The huge debts weren't entirely due to bad luck; a British royal commission blamed some of the money problems on political corruption. The government of Newfoundland went bankrupt in 1934. The British took over the running of the place making it a colony once again. An appointed Governor took charge and acted on the advice of six appointed Commissioners.
