One final act has been played out in the whole Meech Lake drama and now the curtain can be lowered for the last time.
Clyde Wells of Newfoundland had reluctantly signed the deal patched together in Ottawa. He said it was vital to hear what Newfoundlanders thought of the deal that had come out of those long hours of talk in the nation's capital. Premier Wells wanted to hold a referendum but there wasn't time. That 23 June deadline was absolutely immovable he was told.
He settled for sending Members of the House of Assembly back to their ridings to talk to as many people as possible. Members would then be allowed to vote ...
