STIRRING though it has been to be reminded of our national heroes in the otherwise pointless BBC series, Great Britons, it's slightly dismaying that those given the job of promoting the top ten have hardly measured up in presentational terms to the greatness of their subjects.
After all, as we were reminded in last night's bid on behalf of Nelson, the finest naval commander of all time, his contemporaries - with a little help from the publicity-seeking Admiral himself - fell over themselves to pay tribute to him.
Artists vied to paint his portrait, the crowned heads of Europe showered him with medals, orders and titles, ...
