THE COVER of this volume of essays bears a slightly out-of-focus photograph of a section of a quilt. An analogy is drawn between book and bedcover by editor(/photographer) Lydia Hamessley though she allows that, in comparison with a quilt, the collection "lacks a central focus-point." Co-editor Elaine Barkin, too, admits that "the search for a title was often vexing, insofar as neither of us was able to get a sharp fix on the 'aboutness' of the collection."
