When Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, decided to build a device to program surgically implanted cardiac pacemakers, it didn't have all the necessary technology, intellectual property (IP), manufacturing processes or design know-how.
Medtronic could have hired more engineers or partnered with several outsourcers. Instead, it enlisted one partner, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY. Medtronic had the medical technology. IBM had the laptop computing technology and hardware design capabilities that would be needed (see sidebar, page 36).
