NEW YORK-When it comes to the color of rugs, the rich are not so different from you and me.

Many of the antique rugs sold for thousands of dollars at a Sotheby's auction this month underscore the preference among Americans for a muted palette, mirroring a similar trend in retail.

Doris Leslie Blau, a dealer in antique rugs, offered 215 rugs dating from the 16th century to the Art Deco period at the auction, of which 113 items sold for a total of $2.4 million. Many of the rugs for sale were colored in shades of cream, beige, tan, gold, rose and terra-cotta.
