Human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity are increasingly gaining attention within the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR).
At the historic April 2002 NGO briefing, independent human rights experts Asma Jahangir and Radhika Coomaraswamy stressed the importance of including the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in the human rights agenda. Later, Indian activist Aditya Bondyopadhyay denounced the abusive treatment of LGBT people in India. Her direct testimony is only the third to be heard in the UNCHR's history.
