* First, may I say that I have the greatest respect for Fr. Robert F. Drinan and that I nearly always agree with his columns, but unfortunately I think his recent assessment of Jimmy Carter's presidency is highly selective and even sentimental (NCR, Oct. 25).

The Carter administration continued President Gerald Ford's and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's cynical support for the brutal Suharto dictatorship in Indonesia and supplied weapons with which Suharto's army slaughtered as many as 200,000 East Timorese (many of them Catholic, by the way).

Carter backed the murderous military junta in El Salvador as well as the longtime tyranny of the Somoza ...
