Skip the 2 a.m. drugstore trip, check the pantry
It's 2 a.m. and your child is shrieking and tugging at her ears. The November issue of Child magazine lists doctor-approved home remedies that can help.
- For an ear infection, microwave a potato for five minutes, wrap in a wet cloth and put it over her ear. Be careful not to burn her, the irregular heat distribution from the microwave could create hot pockets. The potato will retain heat that soothes. Because some ear infections are caused by bacteria, call the doctor; an antibiotic may be needed.
- Gargle a mixture of salt and warm water to help sore throats. Or try tea with lemon and honey (but ...
