Long before he became a professional pitcher, Barry Zito gained rare insight into the Cy Young Award.
At the age of 12, Zito began taking weekly pitching lessons in San Diego from Randy Jones, another left-hander and winner of the National League Cy Young Award with the Padres in 1976.
``I didn't know so much at the age of 12 or 13 what the Cy Young was,'' Zito said, ``but I knew it was the highest honor a pitcher could get and I knew he won it. It was sitting there in his living room. And I'd look at it and just kind of marvel at it.''
