An item in this issue's Regional News notes the recent adoption of a "Living Wage" ordinance in New York's Suffolk County. We remember when Detroit and Chicago had similar laws, since rescinded, and there is a campaign to extend this concept into communities all around the country.
"Living wage" ordinances set a level of pay that keeps employees above the federal poverty level, and that allows them to afford some type of housing. (We put the term in quote marks because it is used as a political label, not just as a generic concept.)
