The US administration has made a number of significant shifts in its position on the Iraq issue, with the apparent intention of building as broad a coalition as possible in support of US aims. President Bush on 7 October laid out the arguments for keeping up the pressure on the Iraqi regime to get rid of its weapons of mass destruction. But for the first time he indicated that there is a chance of the issue being resolved without the need to resort to military action, or to overthrow the Baghdad regime.
