Folic acid supplements could protect smokers from the harmful effects of cigarettes on their cardiovascular system, London researchers report.
They randomly assigned 24 healthy cigarette smokers with a mean age of 38 to receive either relic acid 5mg a day or placebo for four weeks. In the folic acid group, plasma homocysteine levels fell by about a quarter from 10.8 to 8.2mmol/litre.
