2002 NOV 22 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Researchers in Canada have begun a phase I clinical trial to test a myoblast transplant-based treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
The research team is directed by Dr. Jacques P. Tremblay, a member of the CHUL Research Center, which is part of the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Quebec, and professor at Universite Laval. There is currently no treatment available for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Myoblasts are obtained from a muscle biopsy of a healthy parent. The cells are multiplied in a laboratory, in a new clean room specially build for this research project. These cells are then grafted in a part ...
