WASHINGTON _ With a sniper who has killed nine people still at large, thousands in the Washington area hunkered down Friday for their third weekend of living with fear as a companion.
Although the killer hadn't struck for four days _ the longest lull since the shootings began Oct. 2 _ residents were still changing their plans and rearranging schedules for safety's sake. Rolling cancellations of sporting events were the order of the day.
"We encourage them to not be intimidated, to carry on with life," Montgomery County, Md., Police Chief Charles Moose said Friday of the area's 5 million residents.
