COLUMBUS, Ga. _ If the election for Georgia's U.S. Senate seat were held today, incumbent Max Cleland would have a modest edge over challenger Saxby Chambliss, according to a Mason-Dixon poll.
The poll, conducted Oct. 16-17 by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington, D.C., shows Cleland, a Democrat, leading Chambliss, a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, by a margin of 47 percent to 41 percent.
The kicker is that 9 percent of the 625 registered voters who took the poll remain undecided, while 3 percent are leaning toward Libertarian Party candidate Sandy Thomas. Factor in also that 10 percent of white voters _ Chambliss' strength ...
