RACINE, Wis. _ The same gas that gives soft drinks their fizz could one day be used to heat and cool both cars and homes.
Researchers at Racine-based Modine Manufacturing Co. are making progress with carbon dioxide in automotive and portable heating and cooling systems. They also are interested in using the gas in heat pumps for water heaters and buildings.
Although carbon dioxide is considered a global-warming gas, it could replace the conventional refrigerant R-134a, which causes 1,300 times more global warming and atmospheric damage, according to Modine researchers.
