WASHINGTON _ Sen. Paul Wellstone, a passionate Minnesota liberal locked in one of the tightest re-election contests in the country, died Friday with his wife, Sheila, his daughter Marcia, three aides and two pilots in a plane crash in northern Minnesota.
His death unleashed a wave of grief throughout his state and among his Senate colleagues, and it dramatically complicated the Democratic Party's prospects for maintaining control of the narrowly divided Senate.
The plane, a Beech King Air A100, went down 10:20 a.m. CDT in freezing rain and light snow about two miles from the airport in Eveleth, Minn. Wellstone, 58, was on his way to a funeral. There were ...
