Despite the known benefits of lifetime physical activity, (1) a substantial proportion (24%-30%) of US adults are not physically active on a regular basis. (2) Rates of physical inactivity are even higher for Mexican American men (33%) and women (46%) and African American women (40%). (2) College students are not exempt from this phenomenon. Results from the 1995 National College Health Risk Behavior Survey (3) indicate that 42.2% of undergraduates did not participate in moderate or vigorous physical activity during the week before the survey. The rates for female and minority college students tend to be worse; however, information on this topic is limited. (3)
