When I tell people where I live these days some say 'very posh'. Three years ago they tended to say 'very trendy'.
Five years ago most said, 'Are you mad?' At the time I often asked myself the same question.
When I bought my house five years ago it had no running water, no gas and no electrical wiring. It was in the wonderful Spitalfields Market area of East London - now very fashionable, but then a sad relic of past glories. The last people to live in my house left at the turn of the 20th Century. They were a Jewish family who occupied the attic rooms in what must have been considerable squalor.
