COQUILLE - Invoking the memory of environmental champion and former Oregon Gov. Tom McCall, a lawyer for the state urged a jury Tuesday to punish the owners of the wood chip freighter New Carissa for trashing a pristine beach near Coos Bay 3 1/2 years ago.
But a lawyer for the ship's owner blamed faulty government sea charts, a lack of warning by a Coos Bay bar pilot, and an extreme, unpredicted surge in wave energy that dragged the ship's anchor and left it grounded in the sand, pounded by the surf and leaking 70,000 gallons of oil.
