WASHINGTON _ A Texas moderate and a California liberal threw themselves Thursday into the race to replace departing House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt, offering different roadmaps for leading demoralized Democrats out of the electoral wilderness.
Even before Gephardt had issued a statement making official his widely expected decision, Rep. Martin Frost of Texas summoned reporters to Capitol Hill to lay out his vision for a party reeling from its head-to-head matchup with a popular president.
