MILWAUKEE _ He surfs. He uses the word "dude" in a natural, non-annoying way. He wears thrift-store, er, vintage clothing. He plays guitar. He sings (or at least tries). He is taking acting classes. He throws a curveball that is one of the more feared pitches in baseball. And, as of Thursday, Oakland left-hander Barry Zito owns an American League Cy Young award.
Zito, 24, who posted a 23-5 record and 2.75 earned run average in his second full season, picked up 17 of 28 first-place votes, nine seconds and two thirds to edge Boston's Pedro Martinez in balloting conducted by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
