The University of California on Wednesday unveiled a budget proposal that would include a 6.5 percent increase in the systemwide educational fees for California residents next year _ the first in nine years.
The increase would raise tuition and average campus fees from $3,882 to $4,107 a year at the system's eight undergraduate campuses. That does not include the cost of health insurance, which could add about $500 per year.
Since 1994, regents regularly have raised out-of-state fees while leaving in-state fees alone. As a result, University of California schools, including Berkley and UCLA, have remained a relative bargain for California families among ...
