Given the choice, most transit riders would prefer a train to a bus because rail is quieter, cleaner, smoother and free of traffic.
But what if the bus looked like a train and ran like a rail line? What if the bus had priority at traffic signals or ran on bump-free express lanes separated from traffic? Would riders embrace the bus then?
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) thinks so. The nation's chief transit authority is promoting advanced bus service, known as bus rapid transit, as an affordable alternative to rail - and one that can be implemented sooner than rail.
