WHEN Charles Clarke studied maths and economics at King's College, Cambridge, in the early Seventies, students had an easier life than they do today.

Tuition fees were paid and grants were readily available at a maximum of approximately pound sterling1,500 a year, or around pound sterling9,000 in today's money.

But despite the relative comfort of his student days, Clarke was the kind of militant who would always find something to complain about.

After being elected the Marxist president of the National Union of Students 27 years ago, he delivered a rallying cry against the Labour Government of his day.
