A Coos County jury deliberated for less than eight hours Wednesday before finding that negligence by the ship's captain caused the 1999 wreck of the New Carissa and ordering the vessel's owners to pay the state $25 million to remove the remaining wreckage from the North Spit outside Coos Bay.
State leaders hailed the quick verdict as a strong reaffirmation of Oregonians' environmental awareness and commitment to maintaining public beaches in a pristine condition.
