It seems a little strange that someone so precise as David Trimble is on issues of constitutional law can appear to lose his sure-footedness on those issues of ethnicity which provide living texture for dry constitutional realities.
Of course, as well as being an academic lawyer, Mr Trimble is a politician: and in that mode, he will understand that, when your own followers are going through a difficult and divisive time with their identity, there is nothing so unifying as attacking a perceived adversary.
