Abba Eban, the former foreign minister of Israel and one of the country's best-known diplomats, died Sunday at the Rabin Medical Center in Petach Tikva, a Tel Aviv suburb, at the age of 87.

Eban was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1915. He spent a decade as Israel's first ambassador to the United Nations when the state was created in 1947 and later went on to become Israel's foreign minister from 1966 to 1974.

During his career, Eban, a Cambridge-educated Oriental languages scholar, fought for the causes of the Jewish state and tried to consolidate Israel's relations with the United States. He was ...
