DIED: Minister of the Crown and magistrate Herbert L. Pottle, 95; in his sleep, in Ottawa, September 21. Mr. Pottle, born in Flat Rock, Nfld., was the child of a fishing family. He studied at the University of Toronto and earned a PhD in psychology and education, returning to Newfoundland to work for the education department. From 1944 to 1947 he served as director of child welfare and was one of six men appointed by the British Crown to administer Newfoundland. In 1947 he was appointed judge of the first juvenile court in St. John's and served as minister of public welfare when Newfoundland joined Confederation in 1949. He resigned from Joseph Smallwood's cabinet in 1955 ...
