TOO MANY of our politicians and historians love to moralise retrospectively about what they regard as Britain's past misdeeds or mistakes, and expect us to apologise wherever our forebears did not apply notions of 'politically correct' conduct.

Hence we have such idiocies as our present Prime Minister saying sorry for the Irish potato famine of the 1840s, and our present Foreign Secretary saying sorry for the British Empire's error in bringing prosperity, honest government and the rule of law to its colonial peoples.
