DR ZHIVAGO is one of the most famous cinematic love stories ever made and Daniel Deronda is one of George Eliot's lesser novels, so they make odd rivals as ITV1 and BBC1 slug it out in the battle of the blockbusters.
Early predictions of a damaging head-to-head with both new adaptations heading for simultaneous prime-time Sunday slots proved unfounded, but only because the BBC blinked first. Daniel Deronda would surely have slid into a Sunday slot had it not meant moving within range of ITV's pounds 7m autumn cannon.
And the man in the middle of the battle is of course Cardiff-born Andrew Davies, who adapted both classics ...
