Ed Hughes has colon cancer.
``I'm upbeat and optimistic,'' Hughes, 64, said Thursday. He will undergo chemotherapy once a week when he recovers from the 4 1/2-hour surgery.
``I feel like I just went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.''
Hughes, who came to this market in 1967 as part of Paul Hennings' morning team on WTAR radio, has been anchoring the noon and 5:30 p.m. newscasts for Channel 3.
He co-anchored at 6 p.m. for several months earlier this year. Hughes, a Navy veteran, has served the station as reporter, anchor and military affairs coordinator.
