The past 25 years have brought vast changes in the technology and corporate structure of journalism. Along the way, the definition of news and the expectations of news consumers and producers have been dramatically altered.
The first clue came in New Hampshire, during the 1996 presidential campaign, when, no longer able to tolerate the inanity of Steve Forbes' Total Message Control, I stopped off in a picturesque town to take the local temperature.
