Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell today welcomed further steps to ensure that shabby hotels that fail to meet basic regulatory standards do not harm England's reputation as a tourist destination.
In October 2001, Tessa Jowell and industry leaders announced a 'Fitness for Purpose' initiative, which will create a framework to provide visitors with a firmer assurance that hotels and their restaurants are fit for trading.
