Walter Schug first made Pinot noir in 1954, on his family's wine estate in Germany. That means he should be getting it right by this time, and by most accounts--including mine--he has. Although he makes several other varietals, Pinot noir is clearly his passion.
Schug was born in Germany in 1935 on the grounds of the Staatsweingut Assmannshausen, a top German Pinot noir estate. His father was the winemaker there and he spent his youth working beside his father in the winery and vineyards. Schug graduated from Geisenheim in 1954 and worked at several German wine estates before coming to California in 1959.
