"El Crimen del Padre Amaro" means "The Crime of Father Amaro" in Spanish, and, no, it's not what you think. Based on a 1875 novel by the Portuguese writer Eca de Queiroz, the film has not been "ripped from the headlines," as NBC says of its "Law & Order" franchise.

At first blush, the crime of this reptilian priest (Gael Garcia Bernal, who starred in the comedy "Y Tu Mama Tambien") - a 24-year-old kouros-looking cleric serving a small parish in a poor Mexican village called Los Reyes - is almost a perverse relief: good ol' heterosexual lust.

Really, however, Padre Amaro's transgression is no different ...
