The mood music is being created for a possibly comprehensive resolution of all outstanding issues in the faltering peace process in Northern Ireland.

The British government has clearly been busy briefing leading British newspapers in order to put pressure on the Catholic nationalist Irish Republican Army to make an historic move as well as bouncing the pro-British Protestant unionists into accepting less than they want.

The Republican movement was swift to deny "speculation" in these reports of possible IRA actions as it could limit their bargaining power.
