Musical events have been going on all year long to mark the centenary of Sir William Walton, born in Oldham on March 29 1902, and three substantial new books published during this special year illuminate various aspects of his colourful life.
Weightiest is Malcolm Hayes' selection of Walton's letters, the earliest, written to his mother dated 1910, the last of all written early in 1983 a few weeks before his death, discussing with Sir Frederick Ashton the latter's proposal to choreograph Walton's Varii Capricci. Walton's ...
