As any social observer can attest--even an amateur with, say, only a few months of reading Suzy under her belt--there is an endless supply of parvenus striving for entre into high society. It is, after all, human nature to yearn to join the group, to be on the inside. But society's defenses prove impenetrable for most comers; Park Avenue is littered with the rejects.
The names and details may change, but the plotline rarely does, which makes it easy to forget that the members of New York society's de facto admissions committee are in all likelihood no more than a generation or two removed from new money themselves. Hard as it may be to imagine, ...
