Addressing what many perceive as the primary obstacle to Web services adoption, IBM, Microsoft, and VeriSign have published WS-Security, a Web services security specification. This is the first step toward interoperable Web services companies can deploy without the fear of exposing sensitive data or violating privacy practices. Rather than a complete security solution, WS-Security is a building block to be used in conjunction with other Web services and application-specific protocols to accommodate a wide variety of security models and encryption technologies.
