I drew trees. They go well with the vertical shape of the Horn Book, and anyway I like to draw them. Trees are beautiful and important; they are the lungs of our planet, and they play a big part in human history. I have been working on a book about Charles Darwin that I am calling Tree of Life after the famous branching tree that Darwin drew to illustrate his theory of evolution. He chose not to cover the subject of human origins when he wrote On the Origin of Species, knowing it would cause an uproar; he saved that for a later book, On the Descent of Man.
Living with Darwin these past two years has made me wonder about our "descent." What made our ancient ...
