While other segments of the travel industry--and certainly other U.S. industries--have been severely damaged by the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the airline industry would probably win the award in the category of "Best Public Relations Efforts Despite Less Than Stellar Management." To illustrate, not only did the industry receive an unconditional multibillion-dollar handout from Congress, many carriers are still seeking government guaranteed loans and pushing for legislation in Congress to reduce security costs that are presently paid by the airlines.
Many of the airlines' financial problems predated the terrorist attacks and resulted from poor business decisions. ...
