BRITISH American Tobacco (BAT), the UKs biggest tobacco group, is close to completing the final terms of a joint venture with an arm of China National Tobacco Corporation (CNTC), the worlds largest producer of cigarettes. An announcement is being planned for August.
The venture, likely to see BAT commit up to pound sterling250m (E400m) in start-up capital, will make the group the first foreign enterprise to be permitted to own directly a stake in a company that manufactures and distributes cigarettes in China, the worlds fastest-growing and biggest tobacco market.
