Nov. 29--GARNER, N.C.--To most people, the little wood-frame building under the water tower was a sagging storage shed. But Harold Garner knew better.
Now, 26 years after he decided to save that tiny building, the town's first train depot, it has been converted into a historic gem. By next summer, it will open as a town museum.
All it took was years of toiling in obscurity, negotiating with the railroad, begging for money and recruiting volunteers -- along with some manual labor.
"It became an obsession for me," said Garner, 61. "It just ...
