In the spring of 1976 the faculty at Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, Michigan, approved its first collective-bargaining contract with the university's administration. Faculty members' struggle for collective-bargaining rights had begun nine years earlier and centered around their demand for an active and meaningful role in the government of the university. The notion of shared governance of the academy (shared between the faculty and the administration) is a time-honored tradition in higher education and, to the professoriate, nearly as important as academic freedom.
