In the spring of 1976 the faculty at Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, Michigan, approved its first collective-bargaining contract with the university's administration. Faculty members' struggle for collective-bargaining rights had begun nine years earlier and centered around their demand for an active and meaningful role in the government of the university.
