Nov. 29--Federal officials have rejected a proposal to quarry rock on 60 acres of national forest land east of Auburn.
If it had been approved, the proposal by Watsonville's Granite Construction Co. would have created the only sizable private quarry on public land in the central Sierra. The proposal was to mine the rock type called aggregate at a spot near Yuba Gap in the Tahoe National Forest.
The U.S. Forest Service ruled against the proposal in October, saying it would amount to using public land to compete against enterprises on private land.
